Henry Coe State Park hike 28 May 2005

28 May 2005

Headquarters to Frog Lake, to Middle Ridge, to Poverty Flats, to China Hole, then back to headquarters

John, Casey, and I did the loop of about 12.5 miles on what turned out to be a mostly overcast day, with almost perfect hiking temperatures. I saw more wildflowers on this hike than I've ever seen before at Henry Coe (see the list of reporting blooming wildflowers in the first photo!).

The clouds finally burned off just before we finished the hike, and I could have wished for sun somewhat earlier, but otherwise, this was a truly amazing hike. There were literally fields full of yellow Mariposa Lilies, and plenty of white Mariposa Lilies everywhere (actually many of them tending towards rose, even purple), with Globe Lilies in huge numbers. Lots of lupine, clarkia (four spot) and loads of others as well. The eye almost got tired of seeing them!.

Thanks to Ralph for his style sheet, that made creating this page a minor effort. It's the standard thing; click on the small photo to see a larger (mostly 800x600) photo. The originals are 1600x1200, but I didn't put them on this page.
